Write to your council candidates

A step-by-step guide

  • 1. Find your council candidates contact info

First, look up the candidates standing in your local council election, on Who Can I Vote For? — just enter your postcode to see everyone running. Click each candidate’s profile and scroll down to find their name and contact details (email or postal address, whichever you prefer). Then return to this page to quickly generate a personalised letter to send them.

You’re welcome to contact every candidate in your ward, but you may prefer to be strategic and focus on those most likely to win or those you’re genuinely considering voting for. It’s also worth noting that candidates from Labour and other major UK parties are generally better positioned to influence national decision‑makers who can act on the #Cash4Communities campaign’s demands.

    Dear ,

I am writing as a resident of . One of my key concerns is the future of . This service is vital to local people, and I want to see it protected and properly funded.

[SELECT MOST RELEVANT BLOCK TO CUSTOMISE]

It is especially frustrating to see ‘s decline because the UK remains one of the richest countries in the world. And the hardworking people in our community and our country have made a select few astonishingly rich. There are 156 billionaires in the UK, and just the ten richest of them hold over £176 billion between them — that’s roughly the same amount of money as the entire collective spending of every local authority council in the UK.

There are also 600,000 millionaires living in the UK. It is clear that wealth exists — it is simply not being fairly shared or fairly taxed. I believe it is right that those who can afford to contribute more should do so, to ensure that both our country and can function and flourish. Will you commit to securing the cash our community needs by lobbying the central government for better resourcing?

A fair tax on wealth, as advocated by Tax Justice UK, is a just and sensible way to reinvest in public services at a time when ordinary people have faced stagnant wages, rising costs, and years of damaging austerity. Will you use your position as a councillor, and as a representative of a party with influence at the national level, to demand better funding for local services paid for through fairer taxation of extreme wealth?

In addition, council tax reform, such as the proposals put forward by Fairer Share, could unlock the funds needed to protect our services without pushing the burden onto already squeezed households in . This is a fairer, more sustainable approach that would help councils raise revenue without deepening hardship.

Finally, will you make sure the concerns and views of residents like me, about the unfair undertaxation of the super rich and the need to tax wealth more, are fed back to your political party and its MPs in Westminster?

I would be grateful to hear your position on these issues, and to understand how you plan to stand up for residents who want strong local services but cannot absorb further costs.

    Yours sincerely,
