Tax Justice appoints Faiza Shaheen as Executive Director

30 June 2025, London – Dr. Faiza Shaheen, renowned expert on inequality and former political candidate, has been appointed as Executive Director of the campaigning organisation Tax Justice UK.

The appointment is being made amidst a turbulent time for public services and taxation policy.

Dr. Shaheen is expected to take up the post on July 14th and will provide experience and expertise to drive forward the organisation’s progressive taxation agenda ahead of the critical Autumn Budget. Most recently, Dr. Shaheen has been a visiting professor at the London School of Economics. Prior to this, she was at New York University, where she worked with governments around the world, including Spain and Indonesia, on their policies to reduce inequality. Earlier, she was Director of the Centre for Labour & Social Studies.

Christine Oram, Chair of the Board of Trustees at Tax Justice UK said:

“Tax Justice UK’s board is thrilled to welcome Dr. Faiza Shaheen as our Executive Director. We’re excited to appoint Faiza who brings stature, expertise and experience and we’re confident in her ability to drive the organisation, and its impact, to even greater heights. There is real momentum behind the calls for wealth taxation, and Faiza’s strategic vision and knowledge will be crucial to achieving real change to win tax justice, for the benefit of everyone.”

“The board also gives great thanks to Aleema Shivji who has been an exemplary interim Executive Director at Tax Justice UK – whose great efforts have helped to keep the ship on course while continuing to build momentum.”

Faiza Shaheen, newly appointed Executive Director at Tax Justice UK said:

“Throughout my career, including working directly with governments around the world, I’ve seen how tax, and tax policy sits at the heart of reducing the divides in society and shifting our economic system to work for everyday people. I am delighted to be taking up this role at this crucial time, and utilising my experience and energy to tackle some of the most profound challenges of our time, from extreme concentrated wealth to the climate crisis. Tax Justice UK is an organisation I’ve long admired, and having already met the team, I know I’m joining an extremely talented and dedicated group. I’ll be looking to hit the ground running and ensure taxing the wealth of the ultra-rich is at the top of political and media debate in the months to come.”

Ahead of the Autumn Budget, the government faces a contentious vote in June on its proposed changes to the social security net – in particular the Personal Independence Payment – that Disability Rights UK says amount to the biggest cuts to disability payments on record.

Tax Justice UK has been working with its supporters from every part of the country to encourage MPs to throw their support behind taxes on wealth instead of voting for cuts to disability payments and other cuts across vital services here in the UK and overseas. Taxes on wealth would generate significant revenue to invest in public services, overseas aid and the climate crisis, as a way to revitalise the country and improve living standards. To date, more than 6000 letters have been sent to members of parliament, with all but 10 MPs hearing directly from constituents about the issue.
